The affects on the wildlife

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust (HMWT)
In Hertfordshire and Middlesex, the route will cross the Mid-Colne Valley SSSI on a viaduct bisecting Broadwater Lake Nature Reserve. The 80 hectare site is renowned internationally for the diversity of breeding wetland birds and the numbers of wintering waterbirds such as gadwall, shoveler and great crested grebe, and summer moult gatherings of tufted duck.

Beds, Cambs, Northants and Peterborough Wildlife Trust (BCNP)
The Beds, Cambs, Northants and Peterborough Wildlife Trust believes the High Speed Rail (HS2) route announced on 28 February will be devastating for wildlife and threatens Northamptonshire’s last known population of the nationally scarce Small Blue Butterfly. The HS2 route runs through the south-western edge of Northamptonshire skirting the edge of Brackley. It has a direct impact on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and three Local Wildlife Sites (LWS), with two other important sites in close proximity to the proposed route. These are sites where the HS2 route will result in the direct loss and fragmentation of valuable wildlife habitat and impact on many important species.
